How the project margin is calculated

  1. Hours multiplied by the internal labor rate create a comparable labor cost.
  2. Direct expenses and payment fees are added to labor.
  3. Profit equals the fee minus total project cost.
  4. Margin divides profit by the project fee so differently sized engagements can be compared.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I use employee pay or billing rate for labor cost?

Use a documented internal cost assumption that reflects what you want the project to cover. Do not use the client billing rate as labor cost.

Can I use estimates before quoting?

Yes. Replace estimated hours and expenses with actual records as the project progresses.

Does profit mean the invoice was collected?

No. Profitability and cash collection are separate. Track outstanding fees beside project margin.
